How did you decide to be a volunteer at the Gay Games?
I enjoy volunteering and remember what a remarkable experience I had while I lived in Atlanta, Georgia, during the 1996 Olympic Games, attending Olympic events, seeing firsthand how it brought the people of the city together from the day the games were awarded to the city, and the joy and fun that was felt from people that began to visit and come from all around the world. Being able to see it first hand was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I knew I would probably never have again.
What do you think about the Gay Games coming to Cleveland+Akron?
It is the best thing to happen to this city in a long time and for it to be a gay event, it will bring the world's eyes to what a great city and area Cleveland and Akron has turned out to be and what a vibrant LGBT community we have here in this city.
Do you play any sport? Will you be competing in the Games too?
I bowl and play softball and volleyball, but I won't be participating I plan to devote my time to volunteering and helping where I can in that area.
What are you looking forward to about being a volunteer at the Gay Games?
The ability to share what I know about the city and this area since I moved here 14 years ago. I feel this to be a big achievement for the city and our LGBT community and what we need to gain momentum and recognition as a top world city achiever, not only in our LGBT community but for the world to see firsthand what we are all about here on the North Coast.
What's your volunteer assignment? or Is there a particular area in which you want to volunteer?
I am open to any area I just want to be able to help and share my knowledge and experience of how I came to love this city and the area and its people how I have been welcomed here since I transitioned here back in the year 2000.
Do you do other volunteer work? If so, please explain.
Yes, I also volunteer a foster parent and puppy mill rescue volunteer for dogs that are saved from these horrible conditions and I help get them acclimated to be able to be adopted and find a forever home after enduring such horrific conditions in their lives. It is a sad state of affairs where humans hurt such defenseless animals that can't protect themselves from such people that their only gain is to make money and abuse these precious loving animals and all they want in return is to love and not hurt and have a safe forever home for the rest of their life.
Why do you think it's important to volunteer (at Gay Games or elsewhere)?
It gives the world an added insight from the hometown people who live here and what we can share about we know about the city and the other places and off the beaten path places people should see, visit and the things to do while visiting here that would they not normally know about by just seeing a brochure or traveling through our city.
What do you recommend as must see's or must do's in Cleveland+Akron for participants here for the Gay Games?
My favorite is the communities around the area that are the heart and soul of Cleveland and Akron, downtown Cleveland's reborn Euclid Avenue, Tremont and Ohio City all these areas for the food, University Circle for the culture and museums and many places to see and enjoy, the zoos both Cleveland and Akron, the outer banks of Lake Erie meaning take a boat cruises from Cleveland or out to Put In Bay and see the islands and great attractions, and of course the best place of all CEDAR POINT America's Rollercoast and number 1 amusement park in the world that I visited the first day I was here and fell in love with this place and love going every year you can never get enough of this place.

JOSHUA SIMS
West Akron, Ohio
How did you decide to be a volunteer at the Gay Games?
I have been promoting the Games all year. I ski many of the gay ski weeks including Aspen, Whistler, and Telluride... and have and always will be an excellent steward of all Northeast Ohio offers including the Gay Games.
Do you play any sport? Will you be competing in the Games too?
Not sure, maybe tennis.
What are you looking forward to about being a volunteer at the Gay Games?
I have lived abroad often, including the UK, France, Sweden, Argentina and Australia, and very pleased that I could get to help show the world my region.
What's your volunteer assignment? or Is there a particular area in which you want to volunteer?
I hope it will have something to do with the welcome wagon or guiding. Since returning to make the Northeast Ohio region my home seven years ago after 18 years away, I feel I have a unique understanding and appreciation that opens my eyes to taking advantage of everything it has to offer, from restaurants, orchestra, museums and parks to its rich history. There probably isn't a part of Cleveland or Akron I haven't been to.
Do you do other volunteer work? If so, please explain.
I was a docent at Stan Hywet for a few years, have worked for the Bridge Center for the Arts in El Paso where my second home is, and I've translated documents for shelters into Spanish and French. I was a camp counselor and have been on many guided trips all over the world. Maybe some of these aren't volunteer positions, but they certainly gave me a good education concerning travel and how to deal with groups is a fun positive way.
Why do you think it's important to volunteer (at Gay Games or elsewhere)?
I love people; I love my region and I'm very proud of it and the work it took to get the games and I feel like I owe it to my home to show it off and give people a good time. Also I believe in the idea of the Gay Games in general. It allows the world to see that LGBT are many things that have nothing to do with their sexuality, and I think bringing the games to a city like Cleveland just showcases that. It’s amazing for the region, it’s great for Ohio (and important too). Sport is something that brings people together, it showcases excellence. I want to contribute to that cause.
What do you recommend as must see's or must do's in Cleveland+Akron for participants here for the Gay Games?
The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Orchestra, Cuyahoga National Park (and its bike trails) as well as all the great restaurants around both cities (Fire, Crave, DBA, L'Albatross, Lolita's, Lucky's etc etc etc, The Akron Museum of Art, Cedar Point if possible, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, the historic neighborhoods, and architecture (Shaker Heights, Lakewood, Westlake), Cedar Lee movie theater, Playhouse Square, Lake Erie, University Circle, The Lorain Antiques District, Tremont, Ohio City, Highland Square in Akron, the Akron Museum of Art. As a gay man I like to shop so there should be some information about Beachwood. Or if there are partners that don't play sport that want to take in some of the little towns around Cleveland there should be information about Chagrin, Hudson and Peninsula... Moca. I could go on ((grin)).

Do you do other volunteer work?
I mainly do volunteer work for breast cancer-related causes due to the fact that my grandmother had breast cancer. I also help out and volunteer at work as well with different events.
Why do you think it's important to volunteer (at Gay Games or elsewhere)?
Oh yes for sure, I think it is important volunteer for the Games or be in a sport if you are gay, just as if you would go to pride to show your support for others in the community and that you are not discouraged for who you are.

MS. P. BROWN
Garfield Heights, Ohio
How did you decide to be a volunteer at the Gay Games?
A bumper sticker was given to me at an event. I decided to look it up. I was surprised and overcome by emotions. I realized I wanted to be a part of history in the making. Support my family. But how I thought. I have no talent in any type of sport. I suck at it. But I know I can support by volunteering. Helping people is what I'm best at.
What do you think about the Gay Games coming to Cleveland+Akron?
I'm so excited about the Gay Games coming. It's such a step in the future of changing the world. I'm overwhelmed that Cleveland, Ohio, was chosen for such an event. It is like have the Olympics here.

Not good at sports. But would love to learn some of them one day.

I am honored to be a volunteer for this grand event. Meeting people from all over the world. Learning new things. I want to help make a difference.
Is there a particular area in which you want to volunteer?
Yes, I will be volunteering in the Dancesport level 4, August 12-15.
Do you do other volunteer work? If so, please explain.
I have been a foster mom of over 40 kids. Also, I volunteer with intercity youth, trying to keep away from violence and teaching them a positive way of expressing themselves in the form of entertainment as well as helping them fulfill their dreams with talent moving them into the entertainment world. CNTO Productions was created to help these artists.
Why do you think it's important to volunteer (at Gay Games or elsewhere)?
A lot of my foster kids fought with their identity. As well as some of my artists. I taught them to love who you are. I love all of them just the way they are. My family is proud to be a part of it. Now I have the opportunity to be a part of the Gay Games, an even bigger family. Something that is very important to me.

BRUCE STRUZI, JR.
San Francisco, California
How did you decide to be a volunteer at the Gay Games?
I've volunteered at every Gay Games and have always had a fantastic experience!! It's so very enervating/validating to be in the midst of thousands of folks that are either gay or support our community.
What do you think about the Gay Games coming to Cleveland+Akron?
I was surprised that such a place was selected. BUT, having said that, I know that they must have fulfilled all the parameters set by the Advisory Committee. Those requirements are the same for less known cities as they are for internationally notable locations. I'm excited to see what these two cities have to offer!
Do you play any sport? Will you be competing in the Games too?
NOPE! I'm a klutz, but I'm certainly a capable volunteer!!
What are you looking forward to about being a volunteer at the Gay Games?
I anticipate meeting others and making friends from all over the world. I've continued my new found friendships for decades (!!) and have visited many through the years.
What's your volunteer assignment? or Is there a particular area in which you want to volunteer?
I don't have an assignment as yet, but anticipate the opportunity to help participants register, work security at many venues, watch
over entrances and exits, etc.
Do you do other volunteer work? If so, please explain.
Sure! I volunteer in my community with the local food banks, assist in "working the gates" at many events sponsored by organizations that benefit my community, help coordinate several miscellaneous areas of concern and/or those that have a present or future impact on the day-to-day lives of folks with AIDS, &etc.
Why do you think it's important to volunteer (at Gay Games or elsewhere)?
Well, I've learned that volunteering always is such a gratifying experience. I know from past experience that volunteering is as much giving as receiving the gratitude of those less fortunate. Actually, it seems like "stealing" as I *always* feel I get back sooooo much more than the small efforts I've offered!

RANDY DENMAN
Aurora, Ohio
How did you decide to be a volunteer at the Gay Games?
I had been a volunteer at the Senior Games and was pretty impressed with the way the volunteers were treated and how organized everything was with the exception of the volunteer training session that I attended for the Senior Games- I was frustrated with that session, but overall I was very pleased with my events and how I was treated.
What do you think about the Gay Games coming to Cleveland+Akron?
I really think it’s a great opportunity for the area and if we do it right another feather in our cap which I believe we earned from hosting the Senior games.
Do you play any sport? Will you be competing in the Games too?
I am a bicycle rider but will not be competing
What are you looking forward to about being a volunteer at the Gay Games?
Being able to help the participants and show them our great area and allow them to have a positive experience.
What's your volunteer assignment? or Is there a particular area in which you want to volunteer?
Currently I do not believe I have an assignment. I am flexible and open to any position that I can help with.
Do you do other volunteer work? If so, please explain.
Yes – I have very involved with a non-profit org named Medworks. They/we coordinate free Medical, Dental and Eye clinics around the Cleveland area. The org will be celebrating their 5th anniversary in 2014 and with be coordinating their 25th clinic! I also do some fest volunteering (wine fest, beer fest etc…) I truly believe volunteering has made me a better person because of the type of volunteering I do, the feeling I get after each clinic or even after each fest is that I have made a difference, even if in a small way, I did make a difference today and because that I am a better person than I was yesterday. It is truly an amazing thing to see a person who has not seen an eye doctor in many years and cannot see very well when they enter the clinic to walk out with a huge smile on their face, maybe some tears in their eyes because they just received a pair of glasses and they are seeing things that they have not really seen in years!
Why do you think it's important to volunteer (at Gay Games or elsewhere)?
I believe that the athletes deserve to feel wanted and comfortable by the hosting city and by volunteering I can contribute to their success by insuring a safe, fun and positive experience. It is also important that the athletes support group and coaches have the same experience. IF that happens all of these people will talk up Cleveland which will bring more opportunities to the area.
What do you recommend as must see's or must do's in Cleveland+Akron for participants here for the Gay Games?
There is so many things: Rock and Roll Hall, Great Lakes Science, The Flats area, Christmas House, Tremont area, Progressive Field/Indians- Wine Country in Madison-All the great breweries –Pro Football Hall, Wine Country in the Akron area – I could go on and on –There is so much to do and see- I love showing Cleveland/Akron off

ROBIN SPRINGER-VEGA
Alliance, Ohio
How did you decide to be a volunteer at the Gay Games?
I am a natural introvert and realized at the age of 52 that I had gotten myself into a bit of a rut when it comes to social activities. I also lost my mother recently-- I (and my dad) was her caregiver throughout her 5 year path through Alzheimer's disease. I was her "person"; a privilege I will never forget. Her passing left such a huge hole in my life. I struggled with depression and a sense of being untethered from everything. She was a social butterfly and I am not. So, last year I made a promise to myself that I'd try new things and to go outside of my comfort zone.
What do you think about the Gay Games coming to Cleveland+Akron?
I think it is amazing, exciting and such a great way to show the world how fantastic this area is! It's a gift that we in Ohio should appreciate and revel in. I was thrilled to my bones when I heard that Cleveland had won their bid for the Gay Games. Even more stoked to hear how much of them were to beheld in Akron!
Do you play any sport? Will you be competing in the Games too?
No, I don't. Maybe I should add that to my "to do" list!
What are you looking forward to about being a volunteer at the Gay Games?
Being a part something bigger than myself. Witnessing the history of it. Having fun. Showing the world that we are all connected & that you don't have to be gay to support equality. Standing up to ignorance.
What's your volunteer assignment? or Is there a particular area in which you want to volunteer?
I haven't gotten an assignment yet, but I'm closer to Akron and would like to participate in that area. I chatted with an interesting gentleman when I attended the gathering at Gervassi. He was in charge of the rodeo and it sounds intriguing. I really want to attend the opening and/or closing ceremony. I'm thinking that either of those would be overwhelmingly emotional and amazing!
Do you do other volunteer work? If so, please explain.
I do. I am a very active volunteer for the Alzheimer's Association. I am the captain of "The Wacky Walkers"; a team that has participated in The Walk To End Alzheimer's for the last 5 years in the Dover/New Phila Ohio walks. My team alone has collected over $27,000 in donations for this cause. We do this with multiple fundraisers and raffles. Lot's of hard work! I also am on this year’s committee for my class reunion. It's been fun, and is also part of trying to get out of my comfort zone. I have walked in the Columbus Gay Pride parade with my daughter and her friends &
family a number of times, and volunteered at one of them with her.
Why do you think it's important to volunteer (at Gay Games or elsewhere)?
To do something that is bigger than yourself. I can't tell you how good it feels when
I am fundraising and I meet someone who desperately needs to be heard and to be seen and to be supported. Someone that doesn't know about the resources at their disposal. Someone that is at the end of their ropes in their care giving and just needs to talk to someone else that's been there--that "gets it". It's fundamentally life changing.
What do you recommend as must see's or must do's in Cleveland+Akron for participants here for the Gay Games?
I'd say go another hour (ish)south and visit Warther's Museum in Dover Ohio. It's a very beautiful drive and WELL worth the time!
http://www.warthers.com/ Eat at Lembo's in Akron. It's fantastic, yummy and I work there. http://www.lembos.com/

LORI LYNN CARTELLONE

How did you decide to be a volunteer at the Gay Games?
I decided to be a volunteer at the Gay Games to support this event coming to our city. We just had the Senior Games and I loved volunteering and talking with the participants from out of town. It was a fun way to end the work day! Being so convenient since I work downtown, I can just walk over to the convention center and help out as well as get to know some great people.
What do you think about the Gay Games coming to Cleveland+Akron?
I think it's GREAT! The fact that these games are put together to be inclusive to everyone is amazing, adds a lot of heart.
Do you play any sport? Will you be competing in the Games too?
I will not be competing in the games. Although I did compete in Volleyball and Swim Team in high school, so this gives me a way to bring up some good memories and make some new ones!
What are you looking forward to about being a volunteer at the Gay Games?
I am looking forward to coming together in Cleveland with fellow athletes, and fellow supporters of LGBT.
What's your volunteer assignment? or Is there a particular area in which you want to volunteer?
I am looking forward to signing up to volunteer with Volleyball and Swim Team - the sport I used to be involved in, reliving the glory days! Also I love basketball, so I will probably volunteer for that sport as well, in hopes to see some good match ups!
Do you do other volunteer work? If so, please explain.
I volunteered for the Senior Games when it was in town, I can't always help fund these Cleveland Spotlight Events so to do my part I volunteer, I love to bring people to Cleveland and show them we are a great city! I also volunteer with Hands On Northeast Ohio - a great organization that allows you to select from a ongoing calendar an array of opportunities that help out the neighboring communities. As well as the Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center - an organization I am just starting to learn more about this year although already has shown me so many things.
What do you recommend as must see's or must do's in Cleveland+Akron for participants here for the Gay Games?
I recommend trying some of our Cleveland Restaurants. We have a GREAT inspired chef scene. Michael Symon (from The Chew) has Lolita, my personal favorite of his restaurants, as well as Lola and Bspot, Jonathon Sawyer's Greenhouse Tavern and Noodlecat, Eric Williams has Momocho, Paul Minnillo's flour, Rocco Whalen's Farenheit - Clevelanders know how to eat! If you are staying around downtown Cleveland and don't want to go to one of the big name chef places cruise around Tremont, Gordan Square, or Ohio City - you will defiantly find something delicious!
If you are coming in town with a family I would recommend a Lake Erie Monster's game - even if you aren't a huge hockey fan it is a ton of fun! Buy the $12 tickets, it is a great view from above the ice and if you go on a Friday night it is dollar soda's and dogs AND free skate after the game!!
