Event Description:
The 2014 Gay Games rowing regatta, The Gay Games Rowing Regatta, will be hosted by the Cleveland Rowing Club on their famous rowing course on the Cuyahoga River in downtown Cleveland. The course will be a shorter version of the annual Head of the Cuyahoga race that the Cleveland Rowing Foundation hosts in September. The race will be a 1,500 meter sprint. The course runs through varied areas of Cleveland, from industrial to parkland to downtown Cleveland. The finish line will be located on the CRF Property so that spectators will be able to view the finish.
Divisions:
The Rowing competition will consist of a single regatta with equal events for both men and women. Gay Games 9 will offer the following events:
- 1 x (Single Sculls)
- 2 x (Double Sculls)
- 2 – (Coxless Pairs)
- 4 + (Coxed 4)
- 8 + (Coxed 8)
This regatta will follow the latest revisions to the USRowing age handicap system. Races will be held for men, women, and mixed-gender teams. For mixed-gender teams, an equal number of rowers of each gender must be present (See Rule Below).
Mixed boats: (Deviation from USRowing Rules) The USRowing rules require that mixed boats be composed of 50% men and 50% women for any given lineup. The 2014 Gay Games Regatta permits mixed boats to contain more than 50% of any lineup as women. However, every mixed boat must contain at least one (1) man. For example, a Mixed 8+ may contain up to 7 women and 1 man.
The rowing categories will have age groups as follows:
18-29 |
30-39 |
40-49 |
50-59 |
60-69 |
70+ |
The category of a crew shall be determined by the average age of rowers in the crew, rounded down to the nearest whole number. An age handicap system will be implemented in any flight where more than one age class of rowers is competing. All boats will be classified according to the average age of all the rowers in the boat for handicap purposes. Any entrant failing to indicate a birth date on the entry form will be entered as an 18-year-old competitor.
The 2014 Gay Games Rowing Regatta will use the honor system for lightweight categories. Please be respectful of your competitors and observe the USRowing weight limits. The 2014 GG9 staff reserves the right to respectfully request any competitor to weigh in, if it is deemed plausible that their lightweight status is suspect.
For the 1 x (single sculls), Gay Games 9 will have a lightweight category:
(A). Men:
- Rowers who weigh 160 lbs. or less.
(B). Women:
- Rowers who weigh 130 lbs. or less.
Each gender’s age group division and category winner will receive a medal. Events and categories are subject to expand or contract depending on participant demand. Two entries are required to run an event.
Participation:
Participants must be 18 years or older and may enter both single-gender and mixed-gender events. Participants may enter as many events, as possible, during the regatta.
Rules:
The competition will be conducted under the rules of US Rowing. Please refer to the 2014 Gay Games Regatta Packet for a comprehensive list of all regatta rules. Coming soon!
